Handling Pets When You Move

Moving to a new house is stressful, no matter how much you look forward to it. It is even worse on your pets.

Some pets handle moving better than others. Before you move you need to get a few things in order.

• Vet paperwork. You need to take this with you. The new vet will want to see your pet’s records.

• Collar and tag. If your pet doesn’t usually wear a collar and tag (not a good idea), you need to get them used to the idea. Your new neighborhood may have different ideas.

• Permit. If you have exotic pets, you may need a permit from the place you are moving to. Be aware some places allow exotics and some don’t. Hedgehogs, an increasingly popular pet, are allowed in most US states and banned in a few. Here’s a brief rundown on exotic animals and US states.

DOGS

Dogs, generally take to a move with little problem. As social pack animals, they rely on you to be the leader and whatever the leader does, that’s what they want to do.

CATS

Cats are much more surroundings-focused. They don’t adapt well to new surroundings. If possible, get your cat used to sleeping in a pet carrier. If you can do that, the pet carrier will be a familiar place in the new home. Your cat will need some time to adapt.

FISH

Fish are the most common pets in the US. Moving fish means taking a clean tank full of water. You can buy a battery-powered car oxygenator a bait and tackle shop to keep the fish happy during the move.

BIRDS

Moving a bird takes some extra steps not found with other pets. WikiHow has a great guide with pictures.
