Let’s Talk About Winter Safety for Pets and Surfaces
Last week, I shared a photo on social media of a sidewalk absolutely covered in salt—it got me thinking about how we use ice melt and its potential effects on our pets, our surfaces, and the environment. With icy conditions, safety is a top priority, but it’s important to find a balance.
Why How Much Rock Salt or Ice Melt You Use Matters
Excessive use of rock salt or ice melt can cause more harm than good.
- For Pets: These products can irritate paw pads or worse—become harmful if licked off during grooming.
- For Surfaces: Overuse can damage concrete, corrode metal, and even harm nearby plants.
- For the Environment: Excess salt can seep into the soil or water supply, impacting wildlife and vegetation.
How Much Is Too Much?
The key to safe and effective use or rock salt and ice melt is moderation. Spread a thin, even layer over high-traffic areas, and sweep up any excess once the ice melts. For pet owners, consider switching to pet-friendly de-icers, which are gentler on paws and safer if ingested.
