In the 1680s, Welsh Quakers arrived near Philadelphia and established two separate towns, Bala and Cynwyd (pronounced kin-wood), named after towns back in their home country of Wales. Once a singular post office was established for both communities, the separate towns began to be looked at as one community. Today, however, Bala and Cynwyd each have their own SEPTA station making commuting to Philadelphia a breeze from any point in this beautiful section of the Main Line.
Located in Lower Merion Township, Bala Cynwyd boasts some of the earliest and most fantastic stone mansions in the township. Many of these mansions were built between 1880s and 1920s. Other sections of Bala Cynwyd contain split level homes built after World War II when returning soldiers were settling into suburbs across America. Today there are also condos and co-op buildings that make commuter living comfortable and affordable.
