Newtown Township
About 12 miles west of center city Philadelphia in Delaware County is Newtown Township. Although close to Philly and adjacent to the Main Line, Newtown Township in recent years has become a strong community.
Newtown Square
The center of the township was laid out by William Penn himself in the late 1600’s while he was still in England. This town on the frontier would be the “first inland town west of Philadelphia.” There are several stone buildings still in Newtown Township which serve to acknowledge the area’s rich historical heritage.
Marple Newtown School District
The Marple Newtown School District includes four elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. There are 3347 enrolled from K-12 with a high graduation rate. There are also private schools available including Delaware County Christian School, Saint Anastasia Roman Catholic School, Episcopal Academy, Stratford Friends School, and the Melmark Home and School for those with special needs.
Economic Opportunities Abound in the Township
In addition to local businesses, the headquarters of SAP and Sunoco are in Newtown Township. There are also many health services which provide various opportunities for employment. The steady economic climate is bolstered by some of the lowest business tax rates in the area. The retail corridor along West Chester Pike and Newtown Street Road is booming with business as well.
Small Town Feel
Newtown Township has a small town feel despite being so close to Philadelphia. There are only about 13,000 residents who live in both established homes and new construction. Throughout the township there are many open space trails and parks. The largest park is the Drexel Lodge Park which includes two playing fields, two ponds with fountains, walking bridge, amphitheater, covered pavilion, and historic train museum. There are four other parks and many additional playing fields for the thriving community sports programs. There are also three walking trails. If golf is your game, try the Aronimink Golf Club which has hosted numerous PGA Championships over the years and other national golf tournaments.
