Haverford Township in Delaware county, was laid out by William Penn. The area was mainly agriculture until the turn of the twentieth century when the trolley line and railroad opened up the possibility of easy commuting to Philadelphia. Between 1900 and 1925 the population almost doubled. Many wealthy people purchased farmland and built beautiful mansions, many of which still stand today.
There are many other historical features in town.
The Merion Cricket Club is one of the country’s oldest country clubs. The Pont Reading house was the home of Joshua Humphreys, the builder of the USS Constitution.

There are many top notch golf courses right here. Be sure and tee off at Merion Golf Club which has often been host of the U.S. Open. The Llanerch Country Club has hosted the PGA Championship.

The Haverford School is a private school for boys. The Friends School of Haverford has a long standing tradition as a fine school. The School District of Haverford Township includes five elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. Haverford High School made Newsweek’s 2016 list of Top Public High Schools, it was ranked 294th nationwide! Haverford College, founded in 1833, is a prominent piece of the community not just in terms of the student body, but also the award-winning grounds include an established arboretum with 400 species of trees and shrubs.
